Finnish society

Together with other European countries Finland is a welfare state. This means that some form of assistance is provided for those with limited means. These welfare services are financed by collecting taxes/ by tax-payments, in other words all people living in Finland must pay a certain percentage of their salary as tax for the State. Social security ensures that public services are at everyone’s disposal.

In the eyes of the Law all citizens of Finland hold an equal status. All laws are rules made so that the society can operate effectively. The police force and other authorities monitor the following of laws. The person breaking the law may be either fined or given a prison sentence to carry out. The Finnish state does not acknowledge death penalty.

According to the constitution all citizens have equal rights. In the Finnish society, also both men and women are considered equal. Women study and work outside the home just as men do, and men have no special privileges over women. Women in Finland are very independent and it is not uncommon to see a woman living alone. There is both female and male representation in the Finnish Parliament. The current president of Finland is also a woman.

Authorities work under a strict obligation to professional secrecy. All information given to those in authority for example in the employment office and in the social security office are for the use of these authorities only, and this information will not be released for any other use.
